Sometimes being in recovery feels a lot like being in the wilderness, exploring and navigating uncharted waters. Learning how to plot a course through natural navigation is all about learning how to use your senses to navigate the natural world. Reading nature allows people to see the roots that sustain and explain the world around us.
Seeing the World Around You
The concept behind tracker puddles is simple. The more erosion from somebody or something traveling, the more likely there is to be a puddle in one spot. Just because it is simple does not mean it cannot be beautiful. The lighter the footprints, the more exciting it is to spot the puddle it creates. The next time you find yourself wandering a path outside the usual well-worn ones you travel, stop for a moment to see if you can figure out why it is there. Look at the path and try to find evidence of what other creatures may have travelled the path. Animals make their own path. Some forge their own highways, others intersect with other’s paths, trying to travel the same path they’ve taken.
Finding South
Natural navigation is not about looking at the pathways to see who took which path, or what animal is tracking in this pathway or that. It is also about noticing the sun and its location in the sky. The sun will be due south in the middle of the day, every day of the year everywhere north of the Tropic of Cancer, including all of Europe and the United States. A crescent moon high in the sky, when joining the horns of the moon in a straight line and extending it down your horizon, will lead to finding south. Knowing where to look and when can help you navigate your way if you get lost. Somehow, knowing nature always works in the same pattern, can provide a measure of comfort even when we, ourselves, feel lost.
Sobriety and Navigation
Knowing something about the wider world and how it works can bring a measure of peace to the inner journey of recovery. Even if you never go walking off on distant paths or traversing rough-trodden lands near and far, you can go into your backyard and still have an adventure with nature. Spend time looking up at the sun, moon, and stars. Look at the night sky and marvel at knowing there are planets and galaxies far beyond our comprehension millions of light years away. There is something about putting ourselves in our place, feeling grounded where we are, that can help us navigate our way through recovery at any point in our journey. Sometimes, feeling a bit smaller in the vastness of the universe can help bring clarity to knowing our own challenges are not so difficult to overcome, after all.
