Tips for Surviving That Holiday Office Party

Even when everyone else is looking forward to that holiday office party this season, perhaps you feel a little differently in recovery. Perhaps you don’t even work in an office and wonder what is going to happen when it comes time to celebrate for the holidays. It might be hard to stick to sober resolutions, but it is not over yet. Learn some tips for how to cope and stay sober this season.

Make a Plan

Decide ahead of time that you will not give into triggers. Make additional plans for how to proceed when things perhaps get out of hand:

  • Have an accountability partner on speed-dial
  • Determine how long to stay and when to make plans to leave
  • Plan out your response about why you are not drinking

Find a Partner

Bring support people with you to the party. Invite a sober friend or sponsor to attend the party with you. They can help you navigate any triggers and temptations that come your way. Find someone else at work who does not drink if you are there alone and cannot bring friends. You are likely not the only one wanting to stay sober this holiday season.

Be Designated Driver

If everyone knows you are the safe ride home, they are less likely to offer you drinks. With less pressure from others, you are likely to enjoy staying sober more. You’ll also have added self-pressure to stay sober. You know you have to drive, so you are more likely to keep that personal promise to yourself.

Skip It

Don’t put pressure on yourself to show up at the company Christmas party in full form. Everyone will give you the stink eye but sometimes you have to put your sobriety ahead of work. If the entire evening will be a big temptation to throw in the towel on sobriety, don’t go. Recovery has to be top priority.
