Are Recreational Drugs Ever Safe?

Recreational drugs are a controversial topic. Many states are accepting medicinal marijuana and more are legalizing the drug for personal use. This growing legal acceptance is causing some to wonder if recreational drugs are as safe as everyone says, especially for someone in recovery from alcohol and drug abuse.

Non-addictive Drugs

Among drugs that are illegal, some are considered worse than others. Heroin, crack, cocaine, methamphetamine, and prescription opiate painkillers are considered to be very addictive. They can cause tolerance, withdrawal, and chemical pathways in the brain. Once the pathways are altered, it is more difficult to shift them back. Some recreational drugs, like marijuana, are considered to e non-addictive as they do not have the same effect in the brain as other drugs. Though health effects are minimal, they are still risky for people to take, especially for people in recovery from addiction.

Alcohol

Alcohol is a legal drug, but one of the most dangerous of all the legal drugs out there. Not only is alcohol very addictive, it also impairs perceptions and abilities. This means someone who is drunk may feel as if he can do anything and more. Many people lose their lives in many ways to alcohol, as well as injuring and even killing people while under the influence of alcohol. Over time, repeated alcohol use can cause brain damage, liver disease, pancreatitis, heart disease, and digestive issues.

Recovery and Addiction

Whether or not recreational drug use can be safe depends on the individual. Some people may be capable of handling alcohol without becoming addicted but, once addiction happens, it is best to stay completely sober and clean due to the higher risk of relapse. People with addiction who have gone through recovery may make the mistake of believing they can use drugs safely and recreationally. Any type of substance can trigger old habits and needs which lead to a new addiction very quickly.

Risk of Addiction

When a person becomes addicted to a substance, it takes over a person’s life, inside and out. When a person’s life revolves around drugs and alcohol, it is hard to quit without the help of some resources and supportive services. Addiction can be devious, slowly creeping up on a person. If a person seems to be struggling with addiction, it can help to talk to someone about it and even seek help from a rehab facility to support recovery.
